It’s been who-knows-how-long since I’ve been teaching and playing in London. What’s “time” anyway? The quality of actors there always inspires me. Please join &Also Improv and me for an extraordinary week of great improvisation.
The challenge for most improvisers is trying to stick to “the rules” and believing “Yes, and” is the magic formula for a successful scene. Characters meander and never find their footing. In an instant, you travel from a state of fluidity to a mess of frustration and ask yourself, “How did I go wrong?” or “Now what?”
These masterclasses provide methods and exercises that teach you to connect to your partner and the scene without worrying about the rules.
Get in Focus (8th August 7-10 pm)
What are you focused on when you begin a scene? What great offers are you missing because you’re building a story instead of connecting to your emotional responses? Get in Focus will teach you how to use the power of their kinesthetic responses to build strong scenes the moment the scene starts. Recognize how your body tells you where to focus your attention, then build a great connection from there.
Point of View (9th August 7-10 pm)
Point of view is the bedrock of every relationship, and yet ask an actor what their point of view is, chances are they have no idea. This masterclass will teach you how, by recognizing both your and your partner’s points of view, you instantly create strong dynamics that lead to solid relationships and exciting scenes.
Stage Dynamics (10th August 7-10 pm)
The dynamics between you and your partner are defined not just by your dialogue but by where you are on stage when speaking. Each inch of that stage is there to help you better define your relationships, build tension, and make surprising discoveries. Explore the hidden treasures that lie beneath your feet.
The Weekend Masterclass (12th-13th August, 10.30 am-5.30 pm)
The Weekend Masterclass puts into practice the emotional connections learned in Get in Focus, the confident and focused dynamics illuminated in Point of View, and the physical information illustrated in Stage Dynamics to create compelling scenes you’ve never done or seen before.
(The Weekend Masterclass is open only to students who have attended at least one of the week’s workshops or a previous masterclass with David, in person or virtually.)
