Improv Is Acting

ABOUT

I’m the author of the groundbreaking best-seller, A Subversive’s Guide to Improvisation, Moving Beyond “Yes, And.” From my ten revues at Chicago's Second City performing with the likes of Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Rachel Dratch, to the ten years I spent as Artistic Director of The Second City Hollywood, to the countless worldwide workshops and performances I've engaged in, to my TEDx Talk, “Life: The Product is the Process,” I've developed a simple approach to improvising: Your present awareness is the only thing you need to create compelling, smart, truthful, and surprising scenes. Period. No games, no preconceived premises, no ideas, no ego. All that matters is now. The actor’s level of improvisation experience doesn’t matter, for all you'll need to bring to my workshop is your present presence. All you’ll leave with is your joy, excitement, and confidence. And after all, what more do you need?

“David Razowsky is funny, smart, inquisitive, and artistically fearless.”
–Steve Carell

The words in this volume are as informative, inspired, fearless, and whimsical as the artist himself.”
–Keegan-Michael Key

Hey, improvisers, you can do whatever you want.

In A Subversive’s Guide to Improvisation, Razowsky throws conventional improv wisdom on its head by giving you a unique take on how to create masterful improv scenes. He describes how his life philosophy and improv methodology have evolved on his journey from struggling actor to one of the world's most respected improvisers and coaches.

The challenge for most improvisers is sticking to “the rules” and believing “Yes, and” is the magic formula for a successful scene. Characters meander and travel from a state of fluidity to a mess of frustration and ask, “How did I go wrong?”

A Subversive’s Guide to Improvisation provides methods and exercises that teach you to connect to your partner and the scene without worrying about responding with “yes, and.”

Groundbreaking exercises will teach you how to:

  • Freely express your feelings.

  • Focus on the present.

  • Ask questions.

  • Say “no” to energize your scene.

  • Start a scene without establishing who, what, and where.

David Razowsky studied, performed, taught, and directed at Second City with Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, and Keegan-Michael Key, among others. He served as Artistic Director of Second City Hollywood before turning his attention to teaching his methodology worldwide.

In his workshops, students have expressed how much freer they feel in their scene work - and asked, “Why isn’t this how improv is always taught?"

A Subversive's Guide to Improvisation will change how you practice improvisation--and see the world!

“Love and play are the only things where more is better.”

Today’s guest on ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky is author Sam Wasson. Sam has written books on Bob Fosse, Paul Mazursky, Audrey Hepburn, Blake Edwards, and, the one that brought Sam to my attention, “Improv Nation, How We Made A Great American Art.” This is the only book I’ve ever read on how theatrical improvisation as we now know it came to be. It’s funny, smart, informative, heartbreaking, and alive. In other words, it’s just like a great improv scene. Our conversation bounds from improv inspiration, to what does it mean to play, to passion and creativity, to saying yes.

It’s like an episode of Fresh Air, but with more cursing.

Hear it here!

Winner of the 2015 INNY Award for "Best Comedy Podcast," A.D.D. Comedy with Dave Razowsky has guests from the worlds of comedy, theatre, film, television, and literature on to discuss their journeys and life philosophies with Dave.

Past podcast guests include Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Nia Vardalos, Mo Collins, Tim Meadows, Rachel Dratch, and a couple hundred more (and counting!). ADD Comedy isn't just about comedy, it's about the life that makes us laugh. Let your ears be the judges. Download 'em here!
